The Home Plan

The Home Plan

Your retirement, with a home and without

This is your retirement plan, worked out twice: once renting for life, and once owning a home that’s paid off by the time you retire. See how much each one needs you to invest, starting today.

Monthly, at today's prices, for the kind of home you'd want to live in for the rest of your life.
TFSA, RRSP, stocks. Leave out money you are saving for a down payment.

Don’t skip this. Add every group RRSP and defined contribution pension, for you and your spouse: your share plus your employer’s match. Leave out a defined benefit pension.

Assumptions
How is this calculated?

The owner's plan assumes the mortgage is paid off by retirement. Mortgage payments along the way, the down payment, and pensions such as CPP and OAS are not counted.

Will that last?

CPP and OAS are not included. What you get depends on how long you have lived and worked in Canada, and it lowers both plans by about the same amount, so the gap between renting and owning stays the same.

An educational estimate, not financial, tax or mortgage advice. The stress test replays one period of market history. The future will be different, and it could be better or worse.
